How website visitors decide to buy on any website

Have you ever wondered what happens in a customer’s mind before they decide to buy from you? It’s not usually an instant decision. Most people don’t wake up and immediately purchase something—they go through a process. This process is called the customer journey, and it’s the path someone takes from first discovering your brand to becoming a loyal customer.

I'm going to give you a brief explanation of a customer journey and how your brand and website directly impact the customer’s journey. Let's get started!

The 5 Stages of the E-Commerce Buyer Journey (And Where Branding & Website Design Matter)

1. Awareness: “I Think I Need Something…”

This is where it all starts. Someone realizes they have a need. Maybe their skin feels dry, their go-to bag is falling apart, or they’re craving a better coffee setup at home. This is when they start doing a Google search or searching social media for a solution. Alternatively, your brand is noticed through your marketing efforts.

Where Branding Comes In: Your visuals, messaging, and content (social media, ads, blog posts) should their attention. If your brand doesn’t stand out or look professional, they might scroll right past and miss you at the early stages of research.

Where Your Website Matters: If they click on your ad or post and land on a confusing, outdated, or slow site—it's over. First impressions matter. The design including value proposition messaging, imagery and loading speed are critical at point.

2. Consideration: “Let Me Look Around…”

Now they start researching. They compare options, read reviews, and check out your Instagram and website. They are comparison shopping. We all do it.

Where Branding Comes In: Your brand’s voice, story, and visuals help build trust. If everything looks cohesive and polished, and professional visitors feel more confident in you.

Where Your Website Matters: Your product pages need to answer their questions. Are your descriptions clear? Are there high-quality photos? Do you have customer reviews? If not, they’ll move on.

3. Decision Time: “Okay, I’m Buying…”

They’ve made up their mind! But just because they’ve added something to their cart doesn’t mean they’ll actually complete the purchase.

Where Branding Comes In: They need a nudge. Strong branding creates an emotional connection. Your brand can help them imagine the post-purchase feeling of satisfaction.

Where Your Website Matters: If checkout is clunky, slow, this isn't good. You should also be able to communicate with them if they've abandoned their shopping cart.

4. Post-Purchase: “Did I Make the Right Choice?”

After buying, they’re watching closely. Was the confirmation email clear? Did the packaging impress them?

Where Branding Comes In: A beautifully branded unboxing experience makes people excited to share. Maybe a small freebie or personalized thank you message. Discount for next time? If they love how your brand makes them feel, they’ll come back.

Where Your Website Matters: FAQs, and easy customer support can turn a one-time buyer into a lifelong fan.

5. Loyalty & Advocacy: “You Have to Try This!”

This is the dream—customers who not only buy again but also tell their friends about you.

Where Branding Comes In: A strong brand keeps people emotionally connected. If they love your brand story, your products and how it makes them feel, they’ll keep coming back.

Where Your Website Matters: Keep your brand top of mind for them, loyalty programs, referral discounts, and easy reordering keep them engaged.

Branding & Website Design Aren’t Just “Extras”

If you’ve ever felt like customers are just looking but not buying, it’s likely that something in your journey isn’t working. A beautiful, strategic brand and a seamless website aren’t just nice-to-haves—they directly impact sales.

If your brand or website isn’t helping you turn visitors into customers, let’s change that.
